Living into Our Edenic Identity

Daily Reading

Genesis 1:26-31 >

As we look forward to the coming of Jesus, we anticipate seeing in Him everything that we could be. In Colossians the Apostle Paul calls Jesus “the image of the invisible God,” and the “firstborn” of all creation. When Jesus comes, God begins remaking the creation, and that means that He begins remaking us into His image. The original glory, intimacy, and purpose that characterized our image-bearing in Genesis is re-energized in Christ. Our broken identities, reflected in our difficult relationships and poor self-esteem and misguided purpose in life, are renewed and restored in Jesus. That’s what He comes to do, after all – renew and restore. God gave Adam and Eve a treasure, and they squandered it, like the prodigal son in Luke 15. Now, through Christ, that treasure is restored to us.

So, we’re left with a question: What will we do with our new image? Will we live out of the new self that Jesus has remade in us, or live through the false self that seeks after power, approval, and pleasure? Will we trust that what Jesus has given us is enough, or will we look for another tree to eat from? Will we come to the Communion each week expecting God to feed us and fill us, or will we listen to the subtle voice of the serpent, who tells us, “What God has given you is not enough”?
