In the Tenderloin

It's been a long time in the planning, but we are thrilled to share the news that City Hope is establishing an official presence in the Tenderloin, where our new offices and convertible community development space will be housed. We've signed a lease on a space at 746 Ellis Street, between Polk and Larkin, and are thrilled to be able to share this news and begin to explore new ways to serve our neighbors and train our volunteers. This is made possible by many people's gifts to the City Hope Initiative Fund, and we remain overwhelmed by and deeply grateful for the generosity.

We ask in the coming weeks and months that you please continue to pray with us. There are still more steps in the process before we officially open. Please pray for the zoning, the design, the remodeling of the property, and getting to know our neighbors. As we establish ourselves in this neighborhood, listening to our neighbors and building new partnerships is one of the most important things we can do in order to make the best start possible. We are so grateful to get to celebrate this incredible next step with our church family. Please stay tuned for ways you can get involved once we open.

Our vision for this space is formed by the needs of the people who we work with and serve. We will continue to offer many of the programs we have already been part of over the last few years--that part of City Hope will not change. In many ways, our involvement in the County Jail, El Dorado Elementary, and with addiction recovery in the Tenderloin have prepared us for this place. Through our commitment to doing community development best practices, we have learned to listen to our neighbors, to seek community participation, and to let our agenda be driven by the people we are there to serve. We have also been through a long process of planning and preparation for this opportunity, and enter into it with a sense of serious responsibility and a deep trust in what we've been doing for many years.

City Church in the TL These headquarters will not only be our new City Hope offices, but also include plenty of space that can be easily converted for different kinds of programs and activities. This housing for our programs will help us grow and be more effective. We will be doing a lot of exciting work in the Tenderloin, but not to the exclusion of the work we do in other areas of the city -- that remains a priority for us as well. Our hope is that this will be a place of connection for all areas of San Francisco in which we are involved, and that we can continue to provide holistic care--physical, spiritual, and emotional--to those in our city who are in need of care. This is one tangible way in which we get to love our neighbors as ourselves; by participating in relief, relationship, and reform in San Francisco.

Part of meeting the need in our city involves growth in our volunteers' lives, which is why these headquarters will be a place where we engage, equip and empower our volunteers to find how they fit into the story of San Francisco. As part of a local faith community, we are uniquely resourced to offer holistic care and a supportive community to those on the margins. We want our headquarters to be a place where that message is embodied for everyone who passes through our doors. The City Hope Headquarters will be a place of deep connection in which our volunteers will build relationships with their neighbors—relationships that renew us and our city.
