Membership in the Church Community

The New Testament scriptures are saturated with examples and stories of people committing to the local church. Today, we call this membership. To be a member of a church is to make a public promise to live according to God's Word and to support the work of the congregation. The church body also promises to support and care for members as a unified local worshipping community. In the Bible this is called a covenant; an agreement in which both parties make commitments to one another. A public promise, or covenant, is the basis for all society, according to the Bible: marriage, employment, citizenship, and church membership are all relationships of accountability.

Membership in a church is not like membership in a social club or other organizations. Most organization members are consumers; the organization exists to serve them. The Church is a completely different community - membership means ministry and service, going from being a consumer to becoming a contributor: sharing God's love and care to others through giving of your time, talents and resources. At City Church, we commit to being a church not for ourselves, but for others.

We therefore encourage all those who call City Church their home to become members.

Membership Process

Step #1
Sign up for the next Membership Course. The class is offered in a one day format on a Saturday a few times a year as well as a four-session format on Sunday mornings, multiple times a year. The class in no way obligates you to become a member, but it is required if you are pursuing membership.

You must complete both sessions to become a member of City Church.  If you need to miss a session, please consider taking the class the next time it is offered.

Step #2
Fill out a membership application.

Step #3
Membership meeting. You will meet with one or two members of the church leadership for a 45-minute conversation. This meeting will help us get to know you better, as well as provide an opportunity for you to ask questions.

Step #4
Make public promises. When you become a member, you make promises to the church community. Much of the class time will be spent explaining the meaning of these promises. The final step is taking these vows during a Sunday service, usually with a group of those joining the church.
