I'm Not a Pastor, After All

Sometimes theology tires me.  I avoid debates about predestination versus free will, and dislike conversations around the origin of evil.  Why?  Because these questions will never be answered, and talking about them doesn't help me live more faithfully as a Christian. In my mind, theology without practical application is useless, particularly for those of us who live in this challenging urban context.

However, not all theology is merely theoretical. In November, I'll be attending the "Newbigin House Conference: Leadership for the Church-In-Mission."  Why?  I'm not a pastor, after all.  Why would I be interested in hearing NT Wright talk about the opportunities for God's mission in the world today?  Why would I want to hear Fred Harrell talk about how the Gospel challenges us in our culture?  A few reasons compel me to attend.

Learn to trust God. In attending the conference, I hope to gain fresh insight into Biblical views of faith and life, so I can be better equipped to trust God, especially in the midst of personal difficulties, and especially amidst the complexities of urban life.

Grow with other Christians. I'm excited to attend the conference with some of my friends, and to discuss afterwards what we learned. The conference should be a catalyst for rich conversations with old and new friends.  And I expect to make new friends, as hundreds of people from all over the world are descending on San Francisco for it!

Live out faith boldly. Everyone needs a kick in the butt.  Some of the conference speakers are good at that. They have the experience, passion, and "pastoral edge" needed to push us out of our comfort zones and into bolder love for those around us.  Whether in justice ministries or in our everyday workplaces, we need to serve others boldly, and it will help to hear the thoughts of those with more experience and wisdom.

As an alumni of the first Newbigin Fellowship, and a current cohort leader, I'm encouraging all City Churchers to come and benefit from this great conference.  I'm excited about what's happening at City Church, and our new initiative - The Newbigin House of Studies - and the ways in which we'll all be challenged to live more faithfully as urban Christians in years to come.  Hope to see you there!
