Team of volunteers prepares dinner for 40 residents of Leland House,
an AIDS residence/hospice located in Visitacion Valley
|

Ideally 10 - 12 volunteers, including
4-6 in kitchen, with the rest outside mingling with residents playing
games, pool, watching tv, talking |
| Skills Required |
Relational skills,
basic cooking abilities for at least a few members of the volunteer
team, anyone musically inclined especially welcome.Leland House staff
will assist in the kitchen with cooking, but at least 4-6 should be
able to do food preparation, and at least one volunteer should be
comfortable overseeing cooking of dinner. |
| Preparation Required |
At least one volunteer to select
menu, buy groceries in advance, bring to hospice on day of ministry
project.If you are responsible for bringing dinner ingredients,
you MUST arrive by 3pm and if for some reason you are running late,
you MUST call Leland House!Typical Dinner Menu: Main dish (beef
or pork, not fish or chicken, not too spicy), side dish (vegetables
or salad but not basic green salad), bread, dessertLeland House has
all the basic spices, staples, condimentsBudget: $125 for entire dinner,
expenses will be reimbursed (need receipts and City Church reimbursement
form - available from City Church office)During special holiday seasons, volunteers decorate
dining room accordingly. |

Only healthy volunteers
(no colds please!).Not appropriate for young children. Volunteers
should know that some residents are very sick, many are on medications
and have very low energy with limited attention spans, are in wheelchairs,
no open sores.Dinner is served cafeteria style, residents are served
first then volunteers, volunteers join residents at the tables for
the meal.If volunteers have musical skills, serenading residents during
dinner is encouraged! |

It takes approximately 25 minutes from The Russian Center. Take I-101 south (toward San Jose), pass I-280, and take the Cow Palace/Third Street exit. Stay in
the right lane onto Bayshore Blvd. Pass the 7-11 and turn right on Leland Avenue at the Bank of America. At the third stop, turn left onto Peabody St. Then turn left
into the parking lot and come to the back entrance. The address is 141 Leland Avenue, San Francisco, CA. and the kitchen telephone 415-405-2019 ask for Cleve.
