Understanding the Grand Narrative: A Luncheon and a Conversation

This weekend, we are lucky to have Wesley Granberg-Michaelson with us for two different events at City Church. Join us for a Conversation on Saturday evening, or on Sunday afternoon for a luncheon. Or, if you're feeling ambitious, for both! Granberg-Michaelson, an author and former general secretary of the RCA, will be talking about different topics at both events, and they are both worth checking out.

On Saturday evening, City Church will host Granberg-Michaelson in conversation with our own Dr. Scot Sherman. In his recent book From Times Square to Timbuktu: The Post-Christian West meets the Non-Western Church, Granberg-Michaelson tackles the globalization of the church, and asks what we are to make of the fact that the most rapid church growth is now happening outside of our Western world. Most of the Christians in the world today are non-white, non-European, and live in the Global South.

Is there a connection between what's happening around the world, and what may happen in the secular West?  In San Francisco? What are we to make of this shift? How can we continue to pursue Christian unity among such challenging divisions? And what does it mean for City Church and for the church in San Francisco to "build meaningful bridges between faithful churches in the global North and spiritually exuberant churches of the global South?"

The next event we have with Wesley Granberg-Michaelson is our second in a series of three luncheons on "Understanding the Grand Narrative." As we go through the story of Scripture over the course of nine months, we want to supplement our Sunday services with teaching from other scholars and practitioners. Granberg-Michaelson will be talking with us about "Dwelling in the Word," an approach to scripture that allows it to sink deeply into the life and fellowship of any group. He'll share his own experience and that of Christians from various parts of the world. Then, those present will have the opportunity to learn this simple but captivating way of engaging scripture. It will be a time of conversation, reflection, and spiritual enrichment.
