Advent

Advent tells us that life is filled with waiting on and longing for God. What are you waiting on? What are you longing for?

Is it a job? Spouse? Child? Friends? Physical or emotional health? Self discovery? To finally be happy? To not be restless?

The celebration of the season of Advent (which means "coming" or "arrival") dates back to the fourth century. It’s a time that focuses our attention on Christ's first coming as well as his second coming when he will return to redeem all of creation and rule with all power and authority. Since we know not the day or the hour of Christ's return we are filled with both a sense of joyful expectation and humble reverence, with our spiritual focus being on lives of prayer and preparation.

We long for lives that are whole,
and for a world to be healed,
but we all stink at waiting.

The church has used the season of Advent to hone our spiritual experience to include "waiting" or "longing" as a primary theme. If you think God is supposed to show up all the time for you, you are going to be sorely disappointed. Because regular operational procedure is.... you have to wait.

Jesus is the light who comes into the darkness of our world to bring renewal, life, and hope (Isaiah 42:6).
