The Conquering King and the Tender Shepherd

Daily Reading

Isaiah 40:9-11 >

Sir Ector says of Lancelot, "thou wert the meekest knight who ever ate in the hall with ladies, and thou wert the sternest knight that ever pulled spear out of the breast." Medieval knighthood was not a compromise between ferocity and meekness. In this passage we have the "arm" of the Lord as both ferocious and meek. But for what purpose?  To redeem the world through the coming of One who is mighty to save.  The prophet paints a picture of a Sovereign God who will come with power and might, and with Him will be His reward, His recompense. And what is that recompense?  Or better put, who is His recompense?  His people! His flock!  The "arm" that rules is also the "arm" that saves and tenderly cares for His sheep, gathers the lambs, and carries them all close to His heart.  This is the story of Advent. The mighty God, fulfilling His promises to redeem the world, comes in weakness and tenderness.  The cradle of Jesus is filled by One who rules over all, yet places Himself under all to serve and redeem. This Advent season, pray that our lives will be filled with the Spirit of Christ. Without it we will either be ferocious or meek, but never both, unless we have Him, who was both.  If that happens? We will be looking for a high mountain, to proclaim the good tidings to all.
