The Great Physician

Daily Reading

Genesis 6:9-14, 17-22 >

When you get sick, does food taste different to you? Do you refuse to eat because even the thought of food repulses you? Do you feel hot, then cold, then hot again? Do you find yourself exhausted, yet unable to sleep? Illness prevents us from properly relating to our environment. Like physical illness, sin is a condition that prevents us from relating properly to our surroundings and to God. This is the state of humanity when God calls Noah to make an ark. We are no different. Like the people in this biblical narrative, we refuse to be taken care of by the One who has promised to care for us in every way and by definition this is "sin". What is the consequence? By refusing God's loving care, we bring undue suffering upon ourselves.

However, sin is not a hopeless condition. Jesus comes as the one who can mend our hearts, renew our minds, and bring about an end to our suffering. Through Jesus, God promises to restore us to our original purpose: to thrive in relationship with Him, and to engage in His plan of restoration for the world. In what areas of your life are you not allowing God to care for you? Are you willing to let Jesus, the Great Physician, mend and renew this area of your life this Advent season?
