Scripture reading : Esther 4:11-17

Esther was a beautiful young woman who was chosen by the king of Persia to be his bride. She was also a Jew. Esther and many of God’s people lived in Persia, long ago. Her uncle Mordecai discovered that a wicked man was plotting to have all of God’s people in Persia killed, and he knew that Esther was their only hope. She was the only one who would have even a chance to speak with the king, and ask him to protect the Jews.

There was only one problem: in those days, in that country, kings were powerful and cruel. You couldn’t simply walk into the throne room and ask to speak to the king. You could be killed! Even the queen couldn’t go to the king unless she had been invited. Still, Mordecai told Esther, “Maybe you have been made queen for such a time as this.” Maybe God was at work, in ways they could not see, to protect Israel. Esther bravely chose to go to the king, and because of her bravery, all of God’s people in Persia were saved.

pray:
Our providing, all-knowing God, you work in the world in ways we cannot see. You see to it that we are put in places where we can do your work. Help us to be brave when we need to, and to trust your providence always because you hold our entire world in your hands. Amen.
