Day 21 - The Angel

call:
The Lord be with you.

response:
And also with you.

call:
Today’s symbol is the angel who appeared to Zechariah. The angel told Zechariah that although he and his wife Elizabeth were old, they would have a child. This child would help God’s people get ready for the coming king.

response:
Thanks be to God!

Scripture reading : Luke 1:5-17 (or Luke 1:5-23 and 1:76-80*)

Many, many years had passed since the time of the prophets. The people of Israel were waiting, but it had been so long since they had heard from God. Long ago, Isaiah had promised a Savior and a coming king: would it ever happen?

Then, one day, an old priest named Zechariah was serving God in the temple and something astonishing happened. An angel appeared and promised Zechariah he would have a son. That was almost unbelievable! Zechariah and his wife Elizabeth were old and they had never had a child. And then the angel told Zechariah something even more amazing: this son would be a great prophet, like Elijah, and would call Israel back to God. He would get them ready, because the Lord was coming.

This seemed too good to be true. Zechariah couldn’t believe it, so he asked the angel for a sign. And what a sign! The angel took away Zechariah’s speech. He couldn’t say a word until his son was born. Do you know the rst thing Zechariah did when his son John was born and he could speak again? He sang a beautiful song of praise and joy to God.

pray:
God, you want us to be ready, and you give us what we need to prepare for your coming. You sent John the Baptist to help Israel get ready for the coming king. Prepare us by your Holy Spirit for your coming Son. Turn our hearts back to you, give us light, and guide our feet in the ways of peace. Amen.
