Following the Good Shepherd

Daily Reflection

Jesus continues the shepherd/sheep metaphor saying that his sheep hear his voice and follow him. That's the essence of the Christian life: knowing and following the Good Shepherd. Lent is a time to (re)consider following Jesus. Sheep never "outgrow" their need for a shepherd. They never grow to a point of leaving the flock to tend for themselves, but spend a lifetime under the care of their shepherd. The same is true for all of us. Whether we are considering following Jesus for the first time or have been following him for decades, our greatest need is to follow the Good Shepherd. How can this become more of a reality in our lives? Take some time in prayer to consider the areas of your life where you have not been following Jesus. Rather than resolving to "try harder" or "follow better," think of the ways you have begun to doubt God's goodness and wander from his care. Pray that God will bring back to mind those tender moments that you may have missed. Pray that you will hear his voice.
