Fostering a Lasting Faith

Research has shown that intergenerational worship is one of the most vital gifts we can give our children as they mature in their faith. Allowing our children to enter into worship at a young age fosters a lasting faith. One of the scripture passages that supports this idea of intergenerational worship is Matthew 19:14 "Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs." (See also Matthew 18:3).

We're all called to welcome children into the covenant community. One of the ways we do this is by inviting them into the worship service. They may not be able to mouth the words or understand the liturgy, but being with their parents and observing the entire congregation in worship is vital to their faith development. This experience sets the foundation that will be built on as they grow.

One of the signs of our covenant relationship with our children is in baptism. The entire community pledges to support and nurture the children. Parents and members take the following oath....

Minister: Do you promise to love, encourage, and support these brothers and sisters and these covenant children by teaching the gospel of God's love, by being an example of Christian faith and character, and by giving the strong support of God's family in fellowship, prayer, and service?

People: We do.

We understand that asking the children to be involved in the entire worship service would not be the best way to serve them. So, we invite them in for the music and the responsive readings easing them into our weekly liturgies (call to worship, confession, renewal) showing them that they are welcomed. After the words of welcome we usher them into a space that allows them to explore the Bible stories in a way that is appropriate for their age and development level.

Our hope at City Church is that they will begin to see Church as a safe, familiar environment where they can worship, learn, and be formed.

Thank you for helping us transitioning children into service.
