What is your only comfort in life and in death?

So begins the Heidelberg Catechism, one of the foundational texts of modern Christianity and a pillar of our story here at City Church. Dr. Scot Sherman and Rev. Julie van Til will be leading a class on the Catechism at our Sutter site beginning Sunday, September 29th at 11am.

Like any good Catechism, this one is a summary of the Bible set up in a Q&A format. When asked what our only comfort in life and in death is, the church responds by saying, "That I am not my own, but belong—body and soul, in life and in death—to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ." The word "comfort" here isn't a soft one, but has to do with strengthening, as its Latin root implies. The Heidelberg Catechism has been enormously popular over the centuries, largely because it has proved itself a reliable and inspiring companion for people who need spiritual renewal--and who among us doesn't?

Finding Spiritual Strength... Divided into three sections--Misery, Deliverance, and Gratitude--the Heidelberg is remarkably relevant to our 21st-century lives, especially for having been written 450 years ago. In the words of the Swiss theologian Karl Barth, "the catechism shows us how to stand on our feet again!"  With powerful language, the Heidelberg explores the nature of God, the nature of man, and the relationship between the two. We are "inclined toward all evil," but we can be "patient when things go against us, thankful when things go well, and for the future we can have good confidence in our faithful God and Father."

These classes are open to all and will explore the Heidelberg as a source of spiritual strength. It is a wonderful way to come to know the Bible more intimately in a new format. The Heidelberg is practical and testable; it will provide a great deal of encouragement and instruction as we study it.

In three sessions, we will explore the story behind the Heidelberg Catechism and study its teachings for spiritual encouragement and strength, making familiar this centuries-old spiritual masterpiece.
