How Should Christians Engage the Cultural life of San Francisco?

Open Forum with Dr. Richard Mouw, President of Fuller Theological Seminary

We San Franciscans have the privilege of living in one of the most beautiful and diverse cities in the world. And the food's not bad either. I regularly say to myself, "can you believe you live in San Francisco? This place is amazing!"

You don't have to be here very long before you see that this city is as broken as it is beautiful. Which is why at City Church we regularly talk about our commitment to the renewal of the city. But what does that mean? How do we renew the city? It certainly means that we pray for the city and serve our neighbors. But is there more to this renewal project than prayer and service? Yes. Renewal through cultural engagement.

At our upcoming Open Forum this Monday we'll be discussing the ideas of a Christian visionary on this subject. Abraham Kuyper was a theologian who believed that "every square inch of creation" belongs to Jesus Christ, including the worlds of business, finance, politics, art and learning. And he lived out his vision, becoming the Prime Minister of the Netherlands, founding the Free University of Amsterdam and an influential daily newspaper. He was also a church leader and a theologian.

Our guest speaker for the evening will be Richard J. Mouw, the President of Fuller Theological Seminary. Dr. Mouw is well known for his incisive views on the intersection of culture and Christian faith, and especially for his emphasis on the importance of civility in public life (a good reminder during election season)! His latest book examines the life and legacy of Abraham Kuyper, especially Kuyper's ideas about cultural discipleship, i.e. how Christians follow Christ in every area of life.

Join me for an on-stage conversation with Dr. Richard Mouw and stay for the question and answer session. I promise this will be an evening to remember.
