Are We Supposed to be Meek?

Daily Reading

Matthew 5:1, 2, 5

Reflection

The Bible tells the story over and over again how God uses the poor and the marginalized to humble the powers of this world. The all powerful God uses the weak to be his agents of change (1 Cor. 1:27). He invites us to live into his story and continue the work he has started.

Meek is not a word that most of us would choose to label ourselves. We imagine the powerless, the submissive, those without choice or entitlement to anything. What do we do with this? The meek rarely inherit anything. Is this a call to become meek? Jesus is calling the meek blessed. It is an announcement of good news.

Jesus begins his ministry with this announcement and the decisive moment in his ministry is when he himself becomes the meekest of the meek. He becomes powerless and submissive when he is crucified. He surrenders all that he is entitled to. If this is how the world was redeemed what does this mean for us today? What needs to change in your life for you to bring God's blessing to the world?

A Prayer Attributed to Saint Francis:

Lord, make us instruments of your peace. Where there is hatred, let us sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. Grant that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
