Has Anyone Condemned You?

Daily Reading

John 8:1-12

Reflection

In this text, we see the results of assumed righteousness and pride, and two different types of people are exposed with their guilt. One has all the image of righteousness, and the other all the image of guilt. However, it is the response of Jesus that shocks everyone. Jesus responds to both with mercy.

In this story, the Pharisees reveal the belief that plagues not only their lives, but our lives as well. They believe in rewards and punishment: If I do what is right, than I deserve mercy. If I do wrong, than I deserve punishment. One of the problems with this understanding is that it can lead to judgement of others. The Pharisees believed that the woman caught in adultery deserved punishment. However, Jesus turns their logic upside down. In their effort to condemn the woman, Jesus exposes their sin of self-righteousness and pride. All are exposed as guilty. However, Jesus' response challenges all of their worldview including the woman and thus, we are challenged. We see that no matter where we are in our lives, whether our guilt is public or in private, Jesus offers us mercy.

"Has anyone condemned you?"
"No one Sir"
"Neither Do I condemn you. Go your way and from now on do not sin again." (v.12)

How does this inform how you handle your guilt or the guilt of others? Are you quick to judge? Quick to show mercy?

Lord Jesus have mercy on me a sinner (repeat)
