John 21:15-19

Reflection

Have you ever had a conversation you regret? How about an embarrassing moment you brought on yourself? Have you ever crossed a line that seemed irreparable or hopeless? Just days before the incident recounted in John 21, Peter had declared that he would never leave Jesus, even if all the others did, and even if he had to die with Him. It was a big boast, claiming he was more loyal than all the other disciples. However, before morning, he became the only disciple mentioned in the New Testament who denied knowing Jesus.

In this text, Jesus asks Peter if he loves him. Jesus asks him the question three times, allowing Peter to respond that he loves Jesus three times--once for each denial. This whole conversation shows that Jesus wants to restore Peter. He doesn't want the awkward, unfinished business of Peter's denial to linger over his life. He graciously allows Peter to deal with that failure openly, without condemnation.

We can all approach Jesus this way, knowing He wants to restore the "hopeless" areas of our life.

Lord, help us to allow you to address the sins of our hearts and lives. Give us the grace to honestly face you and humbly respond to your love and restoration.
