The Measure of a Heart

Daily Reading

Luke 18:18-25

Reflection

"What must I do to inherit eternal life?" In response to this question, Jesus gets at the heart of the issue... the heart. The kind of questions that we ask can be a mirror of the condition of our heart. Where do our questions lead? Do they lead to a deeper understanding, a deeper faith? Or, do they reveal shallowness, even stagnation? The Christian faith is a thoughtful faith. Contrary to what many believe, discipleship does not demand blind obedience, but rather it requires continual thoughtful engagement. Asking questions is key to discipleship as it allows us to dig deeper and be challenged in our faith. In this text, the rich ruler dares to ask a question that will challenge his whole worldview. He finds that the things he previously put his faith in becomes non-consequential. This is the risk we encounter if we choose to embrace the Christian faith. As we seek God, we will find that the very things that we put our hope in will not give us the answer we desire. In this season of Lent, what kind of questions will you ask? Are you brave enough to ask the question, "What must I do to inherit eternal life?" What will it reveal of your heart? Are you willing to hear the answer?

Gracious God, help us to be courageous, thoughtful, willing disciples. May we not become stagnant blinded by those things that do not bring us life, but rather may we ask questions that bring us a deeper relationship with you.
