The Mystery of the Thorn

Daily Reading

II Corinthians 12:7-10

Reflection

In contrast to our culture which does anything to escape suffering, the Apostle Paul gives a different perspective on the experience of suffering. Referring to a thorn in his side, Paul sees suffering as a means of proclaiming God's glory and power. What an interesting reality to contemplate that suffering can be a time of praising God. How paradoxical! What is difficult for many to accept and understand is God's refusal to take away Paul's suffering despite Paul's many appeals. What is this aspect of Christianity that enables us to rejoice in the midst of our suffering? It is the understanding that God refuses to leave us alone in our suffering. What thorn are you experiencing? Insults? Hardships? Persecution? Illness? In these circumstances, we have an opportunity to experience and reflect God in a way that transcends what the world expects. Our thorns allow us to be paradoxical people.

"My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness" (v.9b).

Gracious God, give me hope in the midst of my suffering. Help me to see the thorn in my side as an opportunity to praise you. May my praise strengthen my belief in you and in the reality that my suffering is not the last word.
