There is a Light that Never Goes Out

Daily Reading

Matthew 5:14-16

Reflection

Here Jesus delivers perhaps his most well known lesson: the Sermon on the Mount. And if he's the teacher, the disciples are his students. Discipleship involves sincerely following Christ's commands. In essence, it's about living a life that emulates His life on earth—keeping our every thought and gesture in accordance with His guidance. Jesus instructs us to make manifest the transformative power of our relationship with him—to stand out as a "lamp on a stand...." When we're truly abiding in Christ, we harbor little desire to hide that relationship and its transformative powers from others.

Many times, we are overly concerned with how different we should be or how to be lights in the open. "Should I not laugh at that joke? Should I tell them what I do on Sunday? Should I read C.S. Lewis or Francis Collins at the office (you know, Christian, but cool)?" However, that misses the core issue: when we seek out Christ and live a "with-God" life, the concern shouldn't be how we shine, but rather that we shine. Everything else comes naturally. We won't want to conceal the most important part of our very being. In Christ, we can't help but stand out as different from the rest of the world. As we follow his example, we'll put service before personal gain, grace before retribution, and humility before pride, among other things. In this way, our light will burn bright for all to see—whether we think about it or not.

Father, may we shine bright to those around us, through the grace and love of Christ, and may others in turn glorify you after witnessing our example.
