Making Sense of the Old Testament for our Spiritual Formation:

Part 1 of a 3-part Conversation

What are we to do with the Old Testament?

There are plagues and exiles and broken promises. There is violence--lots of violence--and plenty of inane laws. There are loads of contradictory statements. Yet it is part of the Christian Bible. This is Jesus' Bible and, therefore, it is there for our spiritual formation.

Because it asks so many hard questions of contemporary readers, it can seem easiest to set the Old Testament aside as an issue for scholars alone. But the Old Testament has a great deal to say about how we live our lives today, if we know where to look, how to read, and can get past the assumptions we bring to the text.

We are not the first people to ask these questions. Dr. Peter Enns, a professor and Old Testament scholar, will be talking with us about how to make sense of the Old Testament for the modern church. Join us for this first of three lunchtime conversations around the grand narrative of Scripture, this Sunday, November 10th, at 12:30pm at our Sutter campus.

Dr. Peter Enns is a professor at Eastern University (Philadelphia, PA), teaching courses on the Old and New Testaments. He served on the faculty of Westminster Theological Seminary from 1994-2008 and has also taught courses at Harvard University, Princeton Theological Seminary and other seminaries and universities. He is a leading thinker in how ancient Scripture intersects with modern thought.
