The American Teacher

School is out and the fog is pouring in over Twin Peaks. Summertime has arrived. School teachers sigh in relief as the off season begins and they enter into 10 weeks of summer vacation. Sounds great, right? Well, our teachers' jobs aren't always as green as they may seem...

The career of today’s American school teacher is full of sacrifice and hardship.

It's not hard to find the shortcomings of the school system, a recent news article highlights our city's budget shortfall saying, "It won't be enough," which in the future will lead to teachers feeling pinched on resources again. Many of you have heard of the problems in our city's schools. Others of you are working in the schools seeing these problems unfold in real time.

We often feel overwhelmed by the magnitude of our city's painful problems. Our schools are in trouble and although we care, we may not know how to best serve San Francisco's needs. How do we engage this broken part of our city? Through our Kids Hope mentoring program and partnership with El Dorado Elementary our church prioritizes building relationships with the schools through faithful commitment.

So while school is out, what can you do now? The best way to start is to educate yourself on the different problems our teachers and schools face. When you begin to understand the situation it enables you to move forward with compassion, creativity and wisdom. Our Stories of Hope series creates space for collective engagement with difficult topics. The hope comes in when we highlight people and organizations who are making a difference.

Join Us this Sunday...

as we offer you the opportunity to learn about this plight by viewing the documentary American Teacher and having a community discussion about how we as a church can meet this need.
