What is Epiphany

When you hear it now, the word “epiphany” brings to mind that cartoon moment when a lightbulb goes off over someone’s head. To have an epiphany is to have a great, revolutionary idea, something that occurs to you alone and might change the course of history in its scale.

Each year, on January 6th, Christians gather to celebrate a different kind of Epiphany. During the Advent season, we wait for the arrival of Christ. At Christmas, we celebrate Christ’s coming to earth, Word made Flesh. And at Epiphany, we see with gratitude that God was made manifest—another definition of “epiphany”—for all people. We celebrate this day as the visit of the Magi, who were pagan Gentiles coming to bring gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh to the newborn Jesus, who was their king as well as the king of the Jews. This epiphany was an entirely different kind of revolutionary idea—for everyone, rather than just for one.

Join us on Friday, January 6th for an Epiphany worship service, either at the Mission or Sutter campus. We hope to see you there. There will be crafts for the kids and dinner served after the services.
